In SharePoint 2010 it was possible to implement conditional formatting via SharePoint Designer 2010 by using the following button:
In XSLT you also could transform your columns in views and listforms to use images or like this.
This part has changed with SharePoint 2013. It is not possible to use the UI with preview of SharePoint Designer 2013 anymore now. But it is possible to use conditional formatting in a different way, which is also pretty cool.
In this post i would like to share some of my examples.
I created a list with Title, CreateDate (Date), Priority (Choice), PercentComplete (Number as Percentage), Marked (Yes/no)
I would like to do the following things:
#1 CreateDate Column should have coloured background. Red if date is < today, yellow if it is today
#2 Priority should have red background if Priority is high
#3 PercentComplete should be a loading bar
#4 the complete row should be green backgrounded if it is marked
So that it looks like that:
Ok how can we do that?
First we open SharePoint Designer 2013 or we can also use notepad or notepad++. In fact we create a .js file which we put into the folder _catalogs/masterpage/displaytemplates
I call my file cond_formatting.js
Now i open the file and do some editing.
But before editing, i will show you how to reference this file into you desired view:
You should go to your view and click on site settings menu and then edit page:
Now you have to select the view webpart and click on Edit WebPart
After that you insert the link to your .js file (~site/_catalogs/masterpage/Display Templates/cond_formatting.js) inside the miscelanous area at JS-Link
Now we can start with coding:) Before you read on: Yes you have to do that for all views, but you can do that by using Powershell for example.
At first i add the following code block.
In this function i call define the template parameters, like fields and which function each field should use and i define how the highlighting row should be handled by the OnPostRender method.

UPDATE:
If you did not deactive MDS (Minimal Download Strategy) Feature in the web feature area, you might get some terrible effects.
It won’t show the conditional formatting all the time, it will show it if you’re hitting STRG+F5 but that’s not what user like to do all the time. So you have two options. Option 1 you deactivate the feature and everything is good, or you read my next post and have to change a little bit the code, but then everything is ok 🙂

Hello Karsten, I have included a video showing my efforts to try to get the js file to work and for the conditional formatting to happen. I am on a Development box with SharePoint 2013 SP1 March 2015 CU. I created a brand new web application with NO MDS and I hopefully showed, in the video, the steps that I have taken. I created a custom list and put in the same column names and data as you. I was not able to get any of the “colors” to work. I have not changed any of the CSS / formatting, as it’s brand new “out of the box”

did you refresh the page using STRG+F5?
Another point is, do you know the debugger in IE? You can open it by hitting F12 and go to the script, set some breakpoints and afterwords start debugging you can see if it is using your script or if there some errors.

Do you have the function HighlightRowOverride (ctx) defined in your code?
I have something very similar to your code but mine does not work when I use any of the filter or search options on my list. I’m curious if you have the same issue?
In your example, the background color is set to the text background. What if I want the whole cell background color set?
Then you use a div tag like in “#3 PercentComplete should be a loading bar” around the value and set the background color of the div.

hi, if you use the debugger in IE you can get the correct fieldname if you have other special characters.
For a space you can use Job_x0020_Status – “_x0020_” is the replacement for an empty space character.
Hi. I have multiple yes/no columns in each row. I need to change each cell to display red/green depending on whether the value is yes/no. How do I do this? Also, when I upload the script to the masterpages file, to I upload it as a design file or a javascript design file? The second has mandatory fields that require URL’s. What are these? Thank you

I got majority of your code working, except for the date, probably because I’m using UK date format.
Are you able to help?
This is exactly what I need to do, but I need it for if a field is blank to color in that column section. Similar to how your have the priority column but with no text in it. We’re trying to highlight when data gets submitted that is blank so a QA/QC person can easily see the missing data and go fill it in.
I’ve tried modifying this for that use but I’m not getting anywhere. Could you create a column in this walk through that highlights the field if there is no data present?
